The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has given a warning of severe weather (red alert) for six districts of Andhra Pradesh as a well-formed low-pressure region in the southwest Bay of Bengal is expected to become a depression on Wednesday.

The IMD has warned that extremely heavy rains will occur in isolated places of Nellore, Prakasam, Tirupati, Annamayya, Chittoor, and Kadapa districts, thus the officials have to deal with the flooding and waterlogging.

IMD Forecast and Alerts

The weather system was estimated above the southwest Bay of Bengal close to the Tamil Nadu coast at 5:30 am, and it is going in the northwest direction.

“There is a chance of the depression turning over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal off north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts within the next 12 hours,” the IMD reported in its message.

After the system has strengthened, it is predicted to travel across northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the southern coastal region of Andhra Pradesh in the next 12 hours, thus giving rise to widespread rain and winds of high velocity.

In addition, the IMD has put out warnings of:

🔴 Red alert (Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over 20 cm): Nellore, Prakasam, Tirupati, Annamayya, Chittoor, Kadapa

🟠 Orange alert (Very heavy rainfall between 11–20 cm): Kurnool, Nandyal, Anantapur, Sri Satyasai

Next 24 hours heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted for the districts of Sri Satyasai, Anantapur, Nandyal, Kurnool, and Bapatla.

Government Response and Safety Measures

The state’s Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha conducted a review meeting with the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) and asked the public to stay at home unless it is absolutely necessary to leave.

“People must stay indoors and avoid traveling since strong winds are expected,” she said, and added that the police, NDRF, SDRF, and Fire Department teams are ready for emergency response actions.

Revenue Minister A. Satya Prasad gave directions to move people from flood-prone areas to safe places and prohibition on fishing until the situation becomes normal.

Citizens were warned by APSDMA’s Managing Director Prakhar Jain:

“Do not take cover under trees or billboards, and stay away from overflowing roads and streams,” he said.

As part of the emergency preparedness plan, the control rooms in the districts have been activated to get real-time updates and coordinate relief activities.
